Assistance
from 1000 Friends
Thank you
for caring about your neighborhood enough to get involved. 1000 Friends
of Oregon is a non-profit organization advocating responsible land use
planning across the state.
Allocating
Our Limited Resources
With
more than 10,000 local land use decisions being made each year, we must
focus our limited resources very carefully. We concentrate whenever possible
on major state-level or county-wide land use issues that affect significant
areas, such as when city or county plans are updated or significantly
amended. Litigation is a small part of our work and undertaken only as
a last resort.
When We
Get Involved
Unfortunately,
this means we can rarely get involved in local issues, such as permit
decisions or zone changes that may have significant impacts, but on a
limited number of properties. On a few occasions, we participate directly
in a local issue if we see an important legal precedent at stake, or a
site of extraordinary statewide significance under threat.
Resources
You Can Use
We
can offer you recommendations and other resources, however, like our Citizen's
Guides to land use proceedings and appeals. These two guides can help
you participate effectively in local hearings, and undertake an appeal
to LUBA, if necessary. Many citizens have waged successful appeals on
their own using these guidelines. Many others work with area groups like
our affiliates that are active
on local issues.
Making
1000 Friends Stronger
Once
again, many thanks for taking an active interest in Oregon's pioneering
land use planning program. Involvement like yours can make a crucial difference
in the future of our state. Also, if you are not a member, would you please
consider joining us? The generous support of our members has enabled 1000
Friends to advocate responsible growth management for over twenty-five
years. Join.
