Heroes are not giant statues framed against a red sky. They are people who say,
"This is my community, and it's my responsibility to make it better."

–Tom McCall

Want to be a hero? Now’s your chance. Oregon’s land use program is only as successful as local citizens make it. There are several things you can do:

Join a Local Land Use Advocacy Group
Browse our list of affiliates to find a group that is involved in local land use issues near you, and contact them to see how you can get involved locally.

Stay Up to Date on Land Use Issues
1000 Friends publishes a regular email newsletter that keeps citizens up-to-date on critical local and statewide issues and you can help. Land Use Update also provides lists of resources, events, and news from around the country. Click here to sign up.

Join SalemWatch for Statewide Issues
1000 Friends is part of the Oregon Conservation Network. The Oregon Conservation Network publishes SalemWatch, which keeps citizen activists aware of agency and legislative action. Click here to join.

Sign Up to Send Faxes to Your Legislators
The Oregon Conservation Network will alert you of breaking legislation and makes it easy to send comments to your legislator or other decision-makers simply by replying to the email. Click here to sign up.

Become a Volunteer!
We always need people for a wide range of volunteer tasks, from helping with mailings and organizing events to more specialized roles such as technical editors, attorneys and GIS experts.

If you are interested in volunteering for 1000 Friends, please contact Mary Akerill at (503) 497-1000 or mary@friends.org.

1000 Friends of Oregon also offers the annual Paul Gerhardt, Jr. Internship each summer. The internship provides an opportunity for on-the-job experience for planning students or those in similar fields, especially those with an interest in public service. Learn more.
