1000 FRIENDS OF OREGON

What is the status of Measure 37 now?

In the wake of the October 14 ruling by the Marion County Circuit Court, there have been several developments. First, the Oregon Supreme Court has set January 10 as the day for oral arguments in the case. It is not known how soon thereafter the Court may issue its decision. Second, 1000 Friends of Oregon testified in opposition to a land division in Polk County under Measure 37 arguing that the circuit court ruling renders Measure 37 void throughout the state, so that neither state nor local government Measure 37 waivers are valid. Download a copy of Willamette Valley Advocate Sid Friedman's testimony here. Third, forest land owner Sarah Deumling and other plaintiffs sought an injunction to stop all Oregon counties from processing Measure 37 claims. Deumling is concerned that a subdivision next door will stop her from being able to log her property. Read a news story on this litigation.

1000 Friends Sponsors Design Action Team in Garibaldi

A 1000 Friends of Oregon Design Action Team worked with local leaders in Garibaldi on November 7 and 8 to help develop design concepts and an implementation strategy to improve pedestrian links between the waterfront, main street, the Old Mill Marina, civic buildings and future parks. The “Garibaldi Connection Project” also aims to encourage economic development in town and is sponsored locally by the City of Garibaldi, Economic Development Council of Tillamook County, and Port of Garibaldi. Team members included Mike Faha, Dave Leland, Paddy Tillet, and Anita Van Asperdt, all of whom worked on a volunteer basis. A report of the work will be published by January 2006 and lessons learned will be incorporated in the Coastal Futures Project Citizen’s Toolkit. For more information, to go the Coastal Futures Project website.

Staff Attorney Mary Kyle McCurdy urges that Beaverton site a school near students

Beaverton is looking for a place to site a school and cheaper land outside the urban growth boundary is a way they may want to cut costs. But lower land prices shouldn't be the only question for school siting—students need to live near their schools, comments Mary Kyle McCurdy. Read the OPB story on Beaverton's school siting quest.
