Wisconsin
Rejects Measure 37 Bill
On May
6, the Wisconsin Senate voted overwhelmingly (21-10) to reject legislation
modeled on Measure 37 that would have authorized exemptions for community
planning rules. The bipartisan vote came after Senators spoke about
the need to make fair land use decisions and balance property rights
with community concerns. Read
a news release or learn more from 1000
Friends of Wisconsin.
American Farmland Trust proposes farm polices in Agenda 2007
The American
Farmland Trust, as part of an alliance with farms, ranchers, conservationists
and environmentalists, has released its proposals for the expected 2007
federal farm bill. The recommendations rest on three goals: (1) a financial
safety net to protect against shifts in prices and yields, (2) environmental
stewardship to protect water and land resources and (3) new market opportunities
for producers. Learn
more.
Envisioning Maine's Future
Envision
Oregon's efforts are designed to help Oregonians share what makes Oregon
special to them and describe the future they would like for Oregon.
Similar efforts are underway in Maine, where GrowSmart Maine has launched
a new effort asking how Maine can grow without losing what makes that
state special. The Brookings Institution is helping this effort and
will prepare a study by September 2006 and a "Blueprint for Action"
for Maine. As part of this effort, GrowSmart hosted nine public listening
sessions all over the state in late April, which over 500 people attended.

Growth and quality of Life
Quality
of life and growth are compatible, but only if planning makes them so.
That's the recommendation from a symposium on smart growth in Charlotte,
North Carolina. "Quality of life doesn't happen as a byproduct
of a free market," said Harriet Tregoning, executive director of
the Smart Growth Leadership Institute in Washington. "You have
to be deliberate. You can't just fix it afterward. I don't know of too
many communities that have been able to turn a big-box space into a
park." Read
