1000 FRIENDS OF OREGON

Envision Oregon capacity crowd in Corvallis

Corvallis was the site of the first Envision Oregon event that gave the 200 Oregonians who participated a chance to share their values and vision for the future of Oregon. Download the report about the event that was sent by cosponsors to the Big Look Task Force.

Next Envision Oregon event Hood River June 22

The second Envision Oregon event will be June 22 (Thursday) from 5:45 to 8:45 pm at the Hood River Hotel. This is not a night of speeches, but a chance for you to connect with other Oregonians about your values and vision for the future. We are looking for diverse viewpoints and conversations that can have a positive impact on Oregon's future. Learn more and register to attend.

Newport Event

In Newport last night, two dozen people came together at to hear about the future of Oregon and what citizens can do to create the future Oregonians want. 1000 Friends of Oregon staff Cameron LaFollette spoke to Big Look land use review efforts and Sid Friedman shared his lessons learned from years of land use experience. Carol Doty, former Jackson County Commissioner, discussed her experiences protecting the view from Bandon’s waterfront and described threats to Bandon’s watershed from Measure 37 claims. Dave Shellshear, a founder of Friends of Yaquina Bay, described the genesis of the public opposition to ship-breaking in Newport and how they won. The evening helped coastal residents understand and focus on some of the challenges ahead as Oregon fights for its future.

The entire task force will meet next on May and vote on the proposal then, the same day select members of the public will be invited to comment on the draft. VisionPDX Online Survey, Metro New Look Feedback

If the future of Portland is important to you, share your ideas in an online survey. Metro is doing a New Look based on revised projections for the region. Learn more about this process or provide your feedback.

Metro updating Regional Transportation Plan

Metro is starting the process to update its Regional Transportation Plan (RTP), which will be integrated into Metro's New Look regional planning effort. The revised RTP should be ready by November2007. Read details on what Metro is looking at or request to be added to their email notice list.

NATIONAL NEWS

Wisconsin Rejects Measure 37 Bill

On May 6, the Wisconsin Senate voted overwhelmingly (21-10) to reject legislation modeled on Measure 37 that would have authorized exemptions for community planning rules. The bipartisan vote came after Senators spoke about the need to make fair land use decisions and balance property rights with community concerns. Read a news release or learn more from 1000 Friends of Wisconsin.

American Farmland Trust proposes farm polices in Agenda 2007

The American Farmland Trust, as part of an alliance with farms, ranchers, conservationists and environmentalists, has released its proposals for the expected 2007 federal farm bill. The recommendations rest on three goals: (1) a financial safety net to protect against shifts in prices and yields, (2) environmental stewardship to protect water and land resources and (3) new market opportunities for producers. Learn more.

Envisioning Maine's Future

Envision Oregon's efforts are designed to help Oregonians share what makes Oregon special to them and describe the future they would like for Oregon. Similar efforts are underway in Maine, where GrowSmart Maine has launched a new effort asking how Maine can grow without losing what makes that state special. The Brookings Institution is helping this effort and will prepare a study by September 2006 and a "Blueprint for Action" for Maine. As part of this effort, GrowSmart hosted nine public listening sessions all over the state in late April, which over 500 people attended. Learn more.

Growth and quality of Life

Quality of life and growth are compatible, but only if planning makes them so. That's the recommendation from a symposium on smart growth in Charlotte, North Carolina. "Quality of life doesn't happen as a byproduct of a free market," said Harriet Tregoning, executive director of the Smart Growth Leadership Institute in Washington. "You have to be deliberate. You can't just fix it afterward. I don't know of too many communities that have been able to turn a big-box space into a park." Read more.
