Wisconsin Rejects Land Use Waiver Legislation
Citing the unfairness to neighbors and communities created by waivers of land use law in Oregon, this week the Wisconsin senate rejected legislation inspired by Measure 37.
Like Measure 37, AB 675 would have required governments to waive rules or compensate property owners for any loss of speculative value to their property due to land use restrictions.
Steve Hiniker, 1000 Friends of Wisconsins Executive Director, remarked, Letting one person use their property in a way that harms neighbors lacks common sense and is simply unfair. We are heartened that a broad bipartisan group of Wisconsin Senators recognized that Wisconsinites cant afford to open this can of worms, and stopped this radical proposal.
Wisconsin
recognized that removing our ability for democratic land use planning
hurts neighbors and communities said Bob Stacey, Executive Director
of 1000 Friends of Oregon. Treating property owners in isolation
without consideration of people who live down the road is simply unfair.
Theres no sense in arbitrarily having rules apply to some people
and not to others.
