Since 1996, 1000 Friends of Oregon received worldwide attention and national awards for our groundbreaking Land Use, Transportation, and Air Quality (LUTRAQ) project. Yet our transportation work is not done, nor is it limited to the greater Portland area. We continue to advocate for transportation choices and efficient, equitable transportation investment through lobbying the legislature, litigation, public education, and working with local transportation advocates.

Transportation decisions have huge impacts on how we live, and are inextricably related to land use planning. We work to ensure Oregon’s communities are places where all people, including children, the elderly, the poor, and the disabled have transportation options. Some of our work relies on Statewide Planning Goal 12 (Transportation), and its related rules.

While Oregon has taken some initial strong steps to providing efficient transportation choices for all, we still have a long way to go. Our transportation planning efforts often allow unsafe strip development, encourage excessive reliance on the automobile, and ignore or discount the land use impacts of transportation investments. With your help, we can continue to improve our transportation system.
